Crusty Italian-style flat bread

Posted on: March 5th, 2014 by Isabels Free From

This crusty bread is full of flavour and feels like a proper bread. It has a nice texture and the great bready smells – lovely when enjoyed fresh on the day of baking.

Gluten free bread

The day after it will best for making toast, soldiers, croutons or bread crumbs. Still, for the sake of great flavour, crustiness, no additives and it is so easy to make that I think it is worth the rustle for the pleasure.

Crusty Italian-style flat bread

Ingredients

To make a large bread you’ll need:
500g Isabel’s batter mix
7g dried easy blend yeast
2 1/2 tsp sugar
½  tsp garlic powder (barely register as garlic flavour)
50g butter plus extra for greasing
240ml lukewarm milk (full fat or semi-skimmed)

Method

1. Place the flour, yeast, sugar and garlic powder into a large bowl mixing all the ingredient together and make a well in the middle.

2. Melt the butter and allow it to cool down a little and add to the well in the flour mix.  Then add the water stir with a wooden spoon to form a soft dough.

3. Keep mixing the dough vigorously in the bowl for 2-3 minutes and form a ball with greased hands to prevent the dough from sticking.

4. Tip the dough onto buttered and lined with greased proof paper medium size baking tray.  Flatten the dough onto the baking tray, pushing it gently to the corners with greased fingers or the help of a spatula. Cover the dough with cling film and a tea towel – leave to rise until almost doubled in size about 45 minutes to an hour.

5. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/180C fan assisted. Dust the top of the dough lightly with a bit of pizza mix  and place in the oven.

6. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until light golden brown and crusty.  Serve hot or warm.
